A young girl had been murdered in Monroe County. Interracial sex and marriage had been criminalized, in Monroe County. Word spread quickly and WalterвЂ™s reputation quickly depleted. Joe asked that Walter testifies in court. Her husband, Joe, initiated gaining custody of their children and intended to publicly disgrace her for her affair with a black man. Her husband was now aware of the affair that was occurring between her and Walter. She and her husband were on the road to divorce. She was married and was having trouble in her marriage. Walter became involved with a woman who was eighteen years older than him, Karen. He was known as a ladyвЂ™s man around town and was known to be involved with other women, romantically. He was well known and liked in his town, no matter the race. With limited education, he managed to begin his own pulpwood business (24). Walter grew up in a rural neighborhood in Alabama. He felt WalterвЂ™s sincerity and heartache (21). He had spoken to other inmates on death row that day, but WalterвЂ™s case is the one that stuck with him. He first encountered Walter while he was on death row (20). Bryan, who was the attorney on WalterвЂ™s case, was young and just starting his career. But that lasted about maybe five seconds, and then I realized that I had a huge hit.The story of Walter McMillian in Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson is the one that I found the most intriguing. I started singing 'In the ghetto,' and by about 2 o'clock in the morning, I had written the song. I didn't say anything, went home that night and sat down with that lick. He said, 'Hey, I got this lick that Joe South showed me.' He played this lick on the guitar, and boy, I just heard (sings) 'In the ghetto.' Nancy Sinatra had signed me to her publishing company, and a buddy of mine, Freddy Weller, came over. Long story short - I couldn't find anything to rhyme with 'circle.' It was a dirt street ghetto where he lived.ДЄt any rate, I'd always wanted to write a song about it, where a kid is born, he doesn't have a male parent, and falls into the wrong people and dies just as another kid comes along and replaces him. We didn't have a lot of money, but we didn't have broken bottles every six inches.

But he lived in a part of town, and I couldn't figure out why they had to live where they lived, and we got to live where we lived. I remember him being one of my best buddies. I grew up with a little kid whose daddy worked with my daddy, and he was a black kid. They were stuck there, and everybody took off to the suburbs. The word 'ghetto' was just becoming popular to describe the parts of urban areas where poor people were living and couldn't get out.

I wasn't old enough (for it) to be 'ages,' but I was in my late 20s. I had been trying to write a song called 'The Vicious Circle' for what seemed like ages.
